Securus Technologies is a company that implements technology to make correctional facilities and other agencies run safely and smoothly. Since being founded in 1986, the company has served thousands of agencies and over 1.2 million inmates. The company provides many products; however, it’s best known to the public by providing telecommunications services to inmates. To correctional organizations, it provides services like management software, internal and external monitoring, booking software, and many other products.
To advance beyond the status quo, Securus Technologies has acquired many companies throughout the years. The most recent acquisition is the company GovPayNet. This company was founded over 20 years ago by a Sheriff. Seeing an opportunity to consolidate payment processing for cash bail, the service has grown to serve many different sectors, primarily in governmental agencies. Although neither company hasn’t announced any official plans, it’s suspected that the move was to help reduce costs for things like funding inmates accounts, making payments to correctional facilities, and the like. Another recent acquisition of JPay has been referenced, as the two are involved in financial services. JPay has introduced a program to make tablet computers accessible to inmates for purchase. The tablets provide educational software and a limited amount of entertainment, such as news.
Among other recent advances is the introduction of wireless containment systems. WCS devices stop illegal communications from contraband cell phones. This technology has proven to be incredibly effective in its testing stages. Along with the monitoring services provided by Securus Technologies, the WCS implementation should make correctional facilities much safer places. The problem had grown so far out of hand that two murders were carried out because of illegal communications through contraband devices. While the technology is improving, it will be interesting to see what advances are next. Staying on top of their game, Securus Technologies works to benefit every involved in the correctional process.
