Thor Halvorssen is a Venezuelan human rights activist, an actor, and a film producer. He has made some remarkable contributions in fields of human rights such as public interest advocacy, public policy, prodemocracy advocacy and civil liberty. Thor serves as the president of the Human Right Foundation. This is an organization that is dedicated to human rights across the globe. Launched in 2005, the Human Rights Foundation is mostly focused on closed societies and has its head offices in New York City. They have a mission to ensure that freedom is both preserved and promoted. Due to his contribution in the fight for human rights, Thor has been described as ‘the champion of the underdogs and the powerless’ by the New York Times. He started the fight for human rights back in 1989 by organizing opposition to the apartheid rule in S. Africa.
The Human Rights Foundation is focused on fighting oppressive regimes across the globe. They also host an annual human rights forum which has been named the ‘Davos of Human Rights.’ This organization provides a worldwide network for revolutionists to exchange ideas on ridding the world of authoritarian regimes and authoritarian leaders. Thor Halvorssen is also a founder of the Oslo Freedom Forum which is managed by the Human Rights Foundation. Under the Slogan ‘Challenging Power’ the Oslo Freedom Forum is an annual event that was launched in 2009. It aims to bring together notable people in the fight for freedom. These are inclusive of former heads of state, prisoners of conscience and other public figures. The Economist has described the OFF (Oslo Freedom Forum) as a ‘spectacular human rights festival.’
Thor is also a remarkable actor and film producer. He is reputed for his roles in the films such as Halo of Stars, Pups of Liberty, The Sugar Babies just to mention a few. He was also known for his acting role in the film Bomb Specialist back in 2009. He has appeared on numerous show as a guest such as CNN newsroom, Showbiz Tonight, The 700 Club among others.
Thor is known for his passion for human rights; he has lectured many universities on the topics of human rights. He has also been recognized by Judith Rodin; president of the University of Pennsylvania with the Sol Feinstone Award for protecting student speech. Thor is also a publisher whose views has appeared on many papers such as the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine just to name a few.
